Three things you must see in Buenos Aires

Buenos Aires is the cultural melting pot of South America. Locals will tell you that it is distinctly Argentine, but one aimless wonder around the streets of Buenos Aires reveals odes to European culture, around every corner.

If you’re lucky enough to find yourself in Buenos Aires (you don’t even have to win a jackpot at a slot machine for that), it can be an overwhelming place, especially if you only have a couple of days to explore the city.  If you have to see, or do, three things, however, make sure that you don’t miss these.

1.     Boca Juniors. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a football fan or not, going to watch Boca Juniors play at the Bombonera is an experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. Wondering through the streets of the neighbourhood of La Boca a few hours before game time, the atmosphere is already electric, but stepping into the Bombonera for the first time will take your breath away. The fireworks, the noise, the smoke; it truly is an assault on the senses. It’s a sporting experience that knows no equal.
2.     Try the red wine and steak. It may sound clichéd to recommend eating steak and drinking red wine in Argentina, but the reputation that Buenos Aires has for such fare is thoroughly deserved. The city is bursting at the seams with options, but, if you really want to taste the best that the city has to offer, head to La Cabrera in Palermo Viejo; its 800g steaks melt in your mouth.   
3.     Listen to Argentine jazz. Buenos Aires is a music lover’s paradise. Every year, the city hosts some of the world’s top DJs, bands and orchestras. If, however, your want a real taste of Argentine culture, there’s nothing like sampling live, Argentinean jazz. And there’s only one place to go, Thelonious Bar. Dark and brooding, with a distinctly upmarket feel, Thelonious attracts tourists and local alike; it’s a hotbed of Argentine jazz, where established, and up and coming, artists come to play.
